Introduction
If Jesus physically walked into the room today, I believe every one of us would want to be near Him. We would press through the crowd, reach out to touch Him, and hang on every word He spoke. Yet Jesus said something remarkable to His disciples:
“Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away…” (John 16:7)
Think about that for a moment. The disciples walked with Jesus, witnessed miracles, heard His teaching firsthand, and experienced His love in person. Yet Jesus declared that it would be better for them if He left. Why? Because He was sending the Holy Spirit.
The disciples had Jesus with them. We have the Holy Spirit within us. This is not a downgrade—it is an advancement. The Holy Spirit is God’s greatest gift to the believer and the greatest blessing of the New Covenant.
The Holy Spirit Is Our Advantage
Jesus described the Holy Spirit as our “advantage.” The word carries the idea of benefit, increase, advancement, and gain. When Jesus walked the earth, His physical presence was limited to one location at a time. He ministered in Galilee, taught in Jerusalem, and wept at Lazarus’ tomb in Bethany. But the Holy Spirit is not limited by geography.
Today, the Holy Spirit lives within every believer simultaneously. What was once experienced by twelve disciples can now be experienced by millions around the world.
This changes how I view my relationship with God. I am not trying to find Him somewhere far away. Through the Holy Spirit, God’s presence is already with me and within me. Every moment spent with the Holy Spirit is an investment that produces spiritual growth, wisdom, and intimacy with God.
Another, Yet the Same
Jesus promised to send “another Helper” (John 14:16-17). The Greek word used for “another” means another of the exact same kind. The Holy Spirit is not a substitute or a lesser replacement for Jesus. He is the continuation of Christ’s ministry within the believer.
Where Jesus would comfort, the Holy Spirit comforts.
Where Jesus would guide, the Holy Spirit guides.
Where Jesus would convict, the Holy Spirit convicts.
Where Jesus would heal, the Holy Spirit heals.
This truth reminds me that the Holy Spirit is not merely a force or influence. He is a Person. He reveals Jesus, teaches truth, and leads us into a deeper relationship with God every day.
The Holy Spirit Makes Christ Real
One of the greatest ministries of the Holy Spirit is making Jesus real to us.
Paul wrote:
“And my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power.” (1 Corinthians 2:4)
Christianity was never meant to be a religion of information alone. It was designed to be a relationship empowered by the presence of God. Without the Holy Spirit, faith can become routine and lifeless. With the Holy Spirit, Scripture comes alive, worship becomes an encounter, and lives are transformed.
The Kingdom of God is not merely explained—it is demonstrated. The Holy Spirit takes what is written on a page and causes it to burn within our hearts. He turns knowledge into revelation and doctrine into encounter.
Sealed and Secure in Christ
The Bible teaches that believers are sealed with the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13-14). In ancient times, a seal represented ownership, authenticity, authority, and protection.
When God gives us His Spirit, He places His mark upon our lives.
The Holy Spirit is God’s declaration that we belong to Him.
He is also described as the guarantee of our inheritance—a divine down payment of what is still to come. The presence of the Holy Spirit within us is evidence that eternal life, resurrection, and glory are not merely future promises; they are secured realities.
When the enemy tries to make me question my identity or standing before God, I can stand confidently knowing that I have been sealed by the Spirit of God. I belong to Him.
Conclusion
Perhaps one of the most beautiful truths in Scripture is that we do not simply inherit blessings from God—we inherit God Himself. At the same time, God calls us His inheritance. Through Christ, we are brought into a covenant relationship where He gives Himself to us, and we belong completely to Him.
My prayer is that we would become a people who know the Holy Spirit personally, walk with Him daily, and depend on Him completely. Before opening our Bibles, entering a meeting, facing a challenge, or making a decision, may we learn to pause and say:
“Holy Spirit, I yield to You.”
The disciples had Jesus beside them.
We have the Holy Spirit within us.
What an incredible gift. What an incredible privilege.
