Faith is not destroyed overnight.
It erodes. Quietly. Subtly. Gradually.
If we are not intentional, the very things that look harmless can slowly weaken what God is building inside of us.
Here are eight things that destroy your faith — and how to guard yourself against them.
1. Bad Teaching Blinds You to the Impossible
2 Timothy 4:3–4
“For the time will come when people will not endure sound doctrine…”
What you listen to shapes what you believe.
And what you believe determines what you expect from God.
Wrong teaching doesn’t just give you wrong information — it limits your expectation of what God can do.
Ask yourself:
- Who am I consistently listening to?
- Is this teaching building faith or feeding comfort?
- Is it rooted in Scripture?
Bad doctrine makes the supernatural seem unreasonable. Sound doctrine builds expectation.
2. Bad Company Destroys Good Morals
1 Corinthians 15:33
“Do not be deceived: Bad company corrupts good character.”
You cannot surround yourself with unbelief and expect to live in bold faith.
The people around you are either:
- Adding value to your life or…
- Draining value from your life.
Pay attention to the crowd you naturally gravitate toward.
Are they strengthening your conviction? Or weakening it?
Faith thrives in the right environment.
3. Losing Your Appetite for the Word
Romans 10:17
“Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.”
No Word. No faith.
Faith is not built by emotion.
It is built by consistent exposure to Scripture.
When your appetite for the Word disappears, your faith slowly dries up.
Just like the body weakens without food, your spirit weakens without truth.
Guard your hunger.
4. Criticizing What God Is Using
A dangerous spiritual principle:
Whatever you constantly criticize will eventually depart from you.
You cannot desire to flow in healing while speaking negatively about those who operate in healing.
Rule to live by:
Never speak negatively about the ministry or assignment of another.
Honor opens doors. Criticism closes them.
5. Instability in Your Convictions
James 1:8
“A double-minded man is unstable in all his ways.”
It is not the amount of faith that matters most.
It is the stability of your faith.
Faith is not the absence of doubt.
Faith is obeying instruction even when doubt is present.
Your carnal mind will not understand spiritual instruction.
You overcome doubt through obedience.
Faith = Conviction + Works
If you believe it — act on it.
6. No Desire for Mentorship
Philippians 4:9
God establishes people as examples to lead us into greater dimensions.
Pride blocks growth.
Humility unlocks impartation.
The proof of humility is the ability to:
- Submit
- Receive correction
- Follow instruction
Our greatest mentor is the Holy Spirit.
But God often uses people to shape us.
If you refuse correction, you delay your growth.
7. Disobedience to Instruction
James 2:14–26
“Faith without works is dead.”
We often pray for breakthrough while ignoring instruction.
Your next season is often hidden inside your current obedience.
You cannot move out of a season by desire alone.
You move by obedience.
Faith responds. It does not negotiate.
8. Allowing Sin to Remain
Whatever you feed becomes strongest.
If you feed the flesh — the flesh will dominate.
If you feed the Spirit — the Spirit will dominate.
Faith is spiritual.
It requires a spiritual posture to understand and sustain.
Sin dulls sensitivity.
And when sensitivity goes, faith weakens.
Guard what you feed.
Final Thought
Faith is not fragile — but it must be guarded.
Protect what builds it.
Remove what weakens it.
Feed what strengthens it.
Because the life God has called you to live will always require faith.
And faith must be protected.
